Essential oils are powerful! They’re handy to have in your bag of tools for health, healing, and wellness. You may already use them, or you may’ve heard of them but don’t know why they’re so beneficial.
I was skeptical at first myself, but once I FELT the difference, and understood how and why they work, my conversion was easy. How could I not love something that was chemical and preservative free?
As a breast cancer survivor, it’s vital that I KNOW what I’m putting on my skin, breathing in, and ingesting (of course, as much as I can control it). In this day and age, with so much toxicity and pollution around us, it’s important we take charge of our own health. And that means, knowing and understanding various natural alternatives.
My hope is that you fall in love with them as much as I have once you understand how powerful they really are. They’re truly gifts from Mother Nature herself. They’re chemical and preservative free, making them a much cleaner and healthier choice for your body, mind, and spirit.
What are essential oils?
They’re extracted from plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, seeds, roots, and grasses. These oils contain the essential life force of the plants. Therapeutic grade quality oils can be used topically on skin, diffused or misted into the air, and some may even be ingested.
It’s important to use only pure therapeutic grade quality oils. Avoid synthetics made with harmful chemicals.
Pure essential oils help balance the body and work in harmony with nature. These amazing oils perform effectively, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually.
For example, I use a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and lavender essential oil on my skin everyday after my shower. Lavender has a calming effect on the nervous system, which is great for me, cause at times I tend to overthink or worry.
Did you know?
Aromatic oils have been found in the tombs of Egyptian pharoahs. Egyptians soaked fragrant woods and resins in water and oil, then rubbed their bodies with the liquid. They also used these liquids to embalm the dead. Cleopatra, Egypt’s famous queen, was a fragrance fanatic. She drenched the sails of her ship with the oils to attract Mark Anthony.
The Greeks learned about the aromatic oils from the Egyptians. Greek athletes anointed themselves with fragrant oils to increase their strength for competitive games. Roman soldiers were anointed with aromatic oils before battle.
And during the 14th century, the Black Death ravaged Europe and Asia, claiming millions of lives. The aromatic plants clove, cedar, cypress, pine, sage, rosemary, and thyme were burned in the hospitals, streets, and sickrooms to ward off the infectious disease. Perfumers and those who were in daily contact with the aromatic plants seemed immune to the plague.
How Does Your Sense of Smell Work?
Scents affect your health and behavior. Smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than taste!
Your olfactory nerve contains about 50 million smell receptors that protrude from mucous membranes. These hairs collect odors and convert them into messages which are relayed to the olfactory nerve and then to the brain for processing.
Smell signals travel through the limbic system (the set of structures in the brain that deal with emotions and memory) and plays an important role in provoking feelings and memories. The limbic system operates by influencing both the endocrine and the autonomic nervous system.
Since the sense of smell has a powerful impact on memory, odor can evoke the recall of emotions. Like when you sniff a certain perfume, you recall going to your sweet old Aunt Helen’s house who always gave you a bowl of ice cream topped with chocolate fudge. Yum!
Smell impacts how we feel because it’s connected to our nervous system and our nervous system is connected to our feelings.
Why Use Essential Oils?
Essential oils are a wonderful compliment to your self-care routine. You can use them for massage, skin and hair care, deoderants, and even to clean your teeth. When the oils are diffused or misted in to the air, they produce an aroma which can be fresh, clean, invigorating, or disinfecting. And not only that, but you can add them to your cleaning supplies and laundry. The possibilities are endless!
The great inventor, Nikola Tesla, said, “If you want to know the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.” Essential oils have frequencies that help balance and heal the body, mind, and spirit.
